Magic: Knicks will make playoffs
Posted: Thursday January 31, 2008 07:48AM ET
Magic Johnson, the NBA legend and part owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, met with Isiah Thomas for about 30 minutes before their teams played Tuesday night. Johnson expressed sympathy and support and made this bold claim about the Knicks: "They're going to make the playoffs. I think that they're going to be a tough eight or seven seed, too."

Knicks shopping Marbury

Fannation.com

Posted: Wednesday February 13, 2008 07:46AM ET
According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the Knicks have been trying to deal injured 30-year-old point guard Stephon Marbury, who has one year and a hefty $22 million left on his contract. It's been a futile attempt with zero interest, but if Marbury's conspicuous distance from his team while recovering from bone spur surgery on his ankle isn't enough evidence that this is the end of his Knicks run, being on the trading block solidifies it.

Sources: Knicks shopping big men

Posted: Tuesday February 12, 2008 06:11AM ET
With the trading deadline only nine days away, the Knicks are shopping their two big men, Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry, several league executives who have talked to the Knicks in recent days said Monday. It's not known exactly what Isiah Thomas is looking for in return - a Pau Gasol-type fire sale is not being conducted - but he's definitely trying to move both.

Straight Shooting

It sure is difficult to avoid commenting on Isiah Thomas' latest nonsense.

If Isiah Thomas doesn't like how Jamal Crawford and Nate Robinson run the point, why did he acquire them? (Rocky Widner / Getty Images)

Just the other day, he complained that the source of the Knicks' disastrous season is their lack of adequate play at the point guard position. Even before Stephon Marbury went under the knife, Zeke was down on him for looking for his own shots and not properly initiating half-court sets. Thomas likewise disparaged Nate Robinson and Jamal Crawford for being shoot-first players.

Yet Zeke failed to mention that he alone was responsible for bringing all three of these guys to New York. And what does it say about his basketball acumen that a championship-winning, future Hall-of-Fame point guard is unable to realistically evaluate the skills of guys who play the same position at which he excelled?

In bemoaning the inadequacies of Marbury, Robinson and Crawford, Thomas also seemed to have forgotten what he'd said early in training camp about the Knicks' game plan. Since the team had, in Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph, a pair of certified studs in the paint, playing the point would be "easy."

Furthermore, in the Randolph deal, the Knicks acquired Dan Dickau, a smart, experienced, athletic, pass-first point guard. If defense isn't Dickau's strong point, the same can also be said for the three stooges that Zeke kept after quickly waiving Dickau.

As ever, Zeke would gain the respect of everybody in the business (except perhaps Dodo Dolan) if he occasionally accepted responsibility for his own erroneous decisions.

3 Names in the news Ian Thomsen SI.com

3. Isiah Thomas. "Everybody thinks he's on his way out,'' said a rival GM who deals with the Knicks routinely. "I don't get that impression at all.'' This executive has the clear sense that Thomas remains empowered to make any deal he wishes and that his removal as president of the Knicks is not imminent. "I think that owner [James Dolan] is just digging his heels in.'' If Thomas' enemies want him out of New York, they ought to start a "Save Isiah'' campaign. I'm not joking: The only way Dolan is going to replace his team president/coach is if he's convinced the public wants him to stay.

The Anti-All-Star team
Marbury, Big Ben among biggest disappointments

The NBA All-Star Game may be a time to celebrate some of the world's greatest athletes, but we've always been a glass-half-empty sort of fellow. With that in mind, let's take a look at the NBA's Anti-All-Star team, or 12 players who have distinguished themselves for all the wrong reasons.

Starters

G: Stephon Marbury, Knicks -- Time was Derrick Coleman held the imaginary honor of being the player with the most talent with the least to show for it. Congrats, Steph, the crown is yours now, after burning the bridge with perhaps your staunchest defender, Knicks coach Isiah Thomas; persuading your teammates to vote you out of the starting lineup after bailing on them in Phoenix; and having season-ending ankle surgery over the team's doubts. It's no surprise, then, that the Knicks reportedly aren't generating any trade interest in Marbury, who has one year and $21 million left on his contract.

Nuggets-Knicks discuss trade
Posted: Friday February 15, 2008 05:12AM ET

The success of the Blazers has hurt Zach Randolph's trade value, but there are rumblings the Nuggets and the Knicks have discussed a multi-player trade involving the disgruntled power forward. Nuggets general manager Mark Warkentien was the former Blazers director of scouting when Portland tabbed Randolph in the NBA Draft. It is believed names discussed in a potential deal included Linas Kleiza, Eduardo Najera, Steven Hunter and J.R. Smith for Randolph and another Knick. The Knicks appear most interested in up-and-comer Kleiza.

Hit List: Clemens a Hit List Hall of Famer?
Kevin Hench FoxSports.com 15-02-08

How much lower can the Knicks go? The Isiah Thomas train wreck is brutal, but Kevin Hench just can't stop watching.

We start this week's Hit List sifting through the wreckage.

...

4. Isiah Thomas
The train wreck that keeps on wrecking. You just can't look away. Just watching him watch another Knicks' half-hearted loss is mesmerizing. It's clear Zeke still thinks he's pretty cool, pretty charming, with the soft voice, the doe eyes, the smile. He doesn't seem to have any idea how loathed he is (and not just by Knicks fans). He's also, of course, a terrible coach. In a Wednesday loss to the Celtics, despite Boston being without big men Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, Glen Davis, Brian Scalabrine and Scot Pollard, Isiah stayed small, allowing the undersized Celtics to hold their own in the post and on the boards. Early in the fourth quarter, after receiving his first technical for arguing, Thomas was tossed by ref Mark Lindsay after appearing to gently flick the official behind the ear to get his attention. Gosh, it's almost like Zeke doesn't understand personal boundaries. Before heading to the locker room, Isiah further showed up the refs by insisting Doc Rivers join him at midcourt for a strange, awkward hug of solidarity. A disgrace to be sure, but as a study in psychosis that is open to the public, it sure is perversely entertaining.

10. Remy, a.k.a. Brighton Minimoto, standard poodle
Move over, New England Patriots. The biggest choke of 2008 now belongs to Remy, the standard poodle that spent 2007 claiming Best in Show titles from coast to coast but lost in the Super Bowl — the Westminster Kennnel Club Dog Show — to, get this, a beagle. After winning the non-sporting group, Remy was poised to add the WKC to her impressive resume, but she may have looked past Uno, who became the first beagle champion in the 132-year history of the event. No word on whether Uno celebrated to Jay-Z's 99 Problems (But a B---- Ain't One).

Isiah: NBA has no room for bigs
By MARC BERMAN

Here are the quotes that will get Isiah Thomas fired after the season. Here are the quotes from tonight after the 111-103 Boston loss, made only seven months after taking on Zach Randolph's contract. Here are the quotes after Thomas spent the summer touting the dynamic big-man tandem of Zach and Eddy CurryEddy Curry .

Here are the quotes on why Curry played just 9:18 tonight and why he will play less and less this season, if he's not dealt.

Here are the quotes that sum up Isiah Thomas, a man who changes his mind with the direction of the wind.

“What’s happening in this league is a lot of teams are playing really small,’’ Thomas said. “It’s a slow phasing out of the big man in this league. A lot of teams are playing really small and shooting the 3 ball and if you don’t adjust and adjust quickly you can find yourself down 12, 15 points.

“There’ll be some nights he’ll be very useful. There’ll be some nights, the team is so small, it’s difficult to play the big guys.’’

So in four years, Thomas is on Master Plan VIII.

Boston Massacre II?
By MARC BERMAN

We did it for the first two meetings so we'll try a third time. We'd love to hear a score from you on tomorrow's KnicksNew York Knicks -Celtics, Part 3.

The Celtics are without Kevin Garnett in their Knicks' rematch. The last Garden match featured lots of bad blood with Quentin RichardsonQuentin Richardson challenging Paul Pierce to a fight and Eddie House taunting an enraged Isiah Thomas in the final minutes. This will be the Knicks' first meeting in Boston since The Massacre when the Celts led by 53 points. Think the Knicks will go kicking and screaming into the All-Star Break: Boston 99, Knicks 97.

-

There is a reason Isiah Thomas keeps saying he doubts he'll be able to do anything major at Feb. 21's deadline. That's because other than
David LeeDavid Lee and Jamal Crawford, none of his players have enough trade value to execute a deal that makes sense.

Isiah keeps saying he's not into making a lateral move to shake things up, which means a deal including Eddy Curry or Zach Randolph is almost impossible. The Knicks want a lot of value back - Ron Artest-like value - without taking on a lot of payroll. For instance, if the Knicks offer Curry, it would likely be in addition to an awful contract such as Jerome James. Reportedly, the Knicks made such an offer to Sacramento recently in a larger package.

The trade value of Curry has slipped dramatically and Randolph's has been is worse than it was last June. What does it say when the Knicks post their first victory in nine games Saturday in Milwaukee and Zach and Eddy are cheerleaders on the bench for the whole fourth quarter?

In late December, Isiah basically gave up on the inside tandem and handed the keys to the guys at the perimeter. We reported last month Thomas told a dear friend he likes only three players on the squad, Lee, Crawford and Nate Robinson.

That is the sadness to their situation. The team is so in the tank, nobody is willing to offer up anything for Curry or Randolph that will make the Knicks better. And unlike Portland, Thomas is not willing to dump Randolph for peanuts.

Team Titanic II on pace to match original
By MARC BERMAN

It is appropriate the KnicksNew York Knicks stand at 14-35 with a 28.7 winning percentage – exactly on pace to equal the 23-59 clip posted by Larry Brown’s 2005-2006 team, the original Team Titanic.

Remember the absolute outrage from owner James Dolan, to Isiah Thomas to the players, to staff members to David Stern about how Brown tanked the season, that the assembled cast was so much better than 23-59.

Such outrage Stern wouldn’t allow Brown to come away with all of his $50 million salary. I guess that makes me most angry this morning as I head to the morning shootaround to cover Isiah’s losers. At least Brown conducted morning shootarounds that lasted an hour. Thomas’ shootaround Wednesday lasted 20 minutes.

Isiah: Marbury on way out

Posted: Thursday February 28, 2008 06:55AM ET Fannation

Stephon Marbury, don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. That was Isiah Thomas' cold message last night before the Knicks routed the Bobcats 113-89. Thomas strongly indicated Marbury is not in his plans for next season, though the Knick point guard has one year left on his contract.

Knicks owner wants Kiki & Isiah

Posted: Thursday February 28, 2008 09:41AM ET Fannation

The Knicks have had preliminary discussions with Kiki Vandeweghe about replacing Isiah Thomas in the front office, but possibly allowing Thomas to continue as head coach, a person with knowledge of the talks told the Daily News. James Dolan is prepared to strip Thomas of his title as Knicks president, but as implausible as it may seem, the Garden chairman appears committed to keeping Thomas on the bench, where he has complied a 51-89 record since taking over for Larry Brown.

Thomas waffles on Marbury return
Posted: Wednesday February 27, 2008 11:36PM; Updated: Wednesday February 27, 2008 11:36PM SI.com

NEW YORK (AP) -- Isiah Thomas thinks the Knicks' season would have been much different if Stephon Marbury had been around.

And yet, Thomas seems ready to move on without his point guard next season.

A day after finally seeming to confirm that Marbury won't play again this season, Thomas said Wednesday the Knicks will go into 2008-09 needing a third guard to play with Jamal Crawford and Nate Robinson.

But when asked if that player could be Marbury, who will still be under contract for nearly $21 million, Thomas quickly tried to change the subject, saying, "Let's discuss next year when this year's over."

It almost is already for the Knicks.

The Knicks entered their game against Charlotte 7½ games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. But Thomas believes New York would be much closer if Marbury had played more than 24 games.

"I think that goes without saying. Without a doubt, yeah," Thomas said. "He's a good player, he's a quality player. The things that he was capable of doing out on the floor and the things that he does out of on the floor, he's a threat. You have to guard him and he's capable of winning you some games.

"So if was healthy and not had such an emotional year and would have had the same type of year that he had last year, I think it's safe to say that we probably would have won five to six more games here and be right in the thick of things."

Marbury had surgery to remove spurs in his left ankle on Jan. 22 and the Knicks have only said he is out indefinitely. Thomas referred after practice Tuesday to the Knicks having "a major player in terms of an injury go out for the season," though never specifically used Marbury's name. However, none of New York's other important players are hurt.

Marbury is averaging 13.9 points during the worst season of his career and has had a variety of reasons for his absences. He skipped a game in Phoenix in November after a disagreement with Thomas, then sat out 10 games following his father's death early in December.

He returned to play six games before having surgery -- which the Knicks said was Marbury's choice.

Thomas rarely even talks about Marbury, though the two were once close. But even while trying to back away from the comments about Marbury being out for the year, Thomas did acknowledge how much his former star is missed.

"I don't even want to say a small chance because tomorrow's headlines will say "Steph's coming back," Thomas said. "So we'll see what the doctors say (but) we did lose a quality player."

Isiah bans Marbury from Garden

Posted: Friday February 29, 2008 05:44AM ET Fannation.com

Stephon Marbuy has been instructed by Isiah Thomas not to attend Knicks home games - another indication of the continuing feud between the former pals, The Post has learned. According to a Marbury confidant, the embattled point guard is under a gag order by Knicks management, forbidding him from speaking to the media. Marbury has not commented since his Jan. 22 ankle surgery. "They've got a muzzle on him," the confidant said.

Isiah fed up talking about Marbury
Posted: Tuesday March 4, 2008 2:15PM; Updated: Tuesday March 4, 2008 3:42PM SI.com

GREENBURGH, N.Y. (AP) -- Isiah Thomas refused to clear up the mysteries regarding Stephon Marbury's status with the New York Knicks on Tuesday.

Then again, it's hard to provide much detail in 2 minutes, 9 seconds.

That's how long it took the coach to cut short his latest remarks to the media, fed up with talking about a player who may not even wear a Knicks uniform again.

Thomas also abruptly ended two sessions the previous day when the topic of Marbury came up. He tried to steer the topic to basketball Tuesday, but there's not much to talk about there after the Knicks fell to 18-42 with Monday's loss to New Orleans. New York hosts Cleveland on Wednesday.

"We have our hands full with Chris Paul and LeBron James, and when you have the opportunity to speak with Steph you can ask him all the questions that you need to ask him," Thomas said.

Thomas said Marbury, who had left ankle surgery Jan. 22, was in the training room rehabbing. But when reporters asked a Knicks official if the point guard would come out and speak, they were told he had already left.

Marbury hasn't talked to the press since Jan. 16, the day before deciding to have surgery after an MRI exam. Thomas said before Monday's game he expected Marbury to be there to answer questions, but Marbury never showed. Thomas also said he expects Marbury at Wednesday's game.

That all comes after it was reported Thomas told Marbury to stay away from the team while rehabbing. Marbury hasn't been seen at any home games since his surgery, though the Knicks say he has been at their training center during practices getting treatment.

It isn't clear whether the Knicks require or expect injured players to attend home games. Forward Zach Randolph stayed home Monday with his bruised foot, but guard Jamal Crawford came most of the time last season when he was able to get around following ankle surgery.

"There was never any rules really discussed with me, I was just there," Crawford said. "I just wanted to be around."

But Thomas may not care if Marbury is, since he already seems ready for life without him. The relationship between the coach and point guard has been strained since November, when Marbury skipped a game in Phoenix following a dispute with Thomas.

Last week, Thomas said the Knicks would need a third guard next season to play with Crawford and Nate Robinson, even though Marbury will still be under contract. So if Thomas is still around, it seems likely that Marbury won't be.

Then Thomas won't have to deal with any more Marbury queries.

"Any questions about LeBron? LeBron James?" Thomas said after the fifth in a row about Marbury. "Going once, going twice?

And then he was gone.
